You’ve probably heard all the buzz about CBD oil and how it is being recommended by a large number of experts in the wellness industry. Just take a few scrolls through Instagram and I can almost guarantee that you will see some mention of CBD oil being infused in lattes, bath bombs, chocolates, lotions, and so forth. Heck, it can even be used for your pet (my dog, Lucy, gets a daily dose with her food).
But what is CBD oil, exactly? There are still a lot of questions being asked about this ancient healing elixir as it makes its comeback in the wellness industry and beyond, but it is my hopes that after reading this post you have a better understanding of its benefits and uses.
**Before we get started, please know that I am not a doctor and I am
only sharing from personal experience and research.**
What is CBD (cannabidiol) oil?
CBD oil, also known as cannabidiol, is derived from the Cannabis plant and is often extracted from the resin glands of the plants flowers. It can also be extracted from hemp plants which are industrial forms of Cannabis with small bud flowers and a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC which is part of the plant that contains psychoactive) concentration of 0.3% or less.
As mentioned above CBD oil can be found in many different forms including tinctures, capsules, liquids, and topical.
So what are the benefits of taking CBD oil?
CBD oil is a powerful healer for inflammation, anxiety, and sleep disorder. But this plant derived oil has been known to help with a number of other diseases including:

Sounds like some magical potion, eh?
Is it legal? And where can I buy?
CBD oil is legal and sold in 29 states where medical and/or recreational marijuana is legalized, but is still unavailable in many parts of the country. Although it is legal, the FDA has yet to approve any CBD oil products for any sort of purpose meaning that the production, labeling, and distribution are not federally regulated.
Since CBD oil is not regulated by the federal government, you should always research the brand before purchasing. Here is a little tip, always ask for the lab testing documentation and only purchase from states where production is regulated. It is important to only purchase products that are being tested for purity, content (again, no fluff!), and potency. Obviously you want to avoid any products with impurities, fungus, pesticides, or deceiving labels.
I’ve only tried a select few brands, but one of my favorites is Populum and I highly recommend this brand. They not only have high quality products, but build great relationships with their customers and are always there to answer questions. A few words from the co-founder below:
“We are passionate about using high-quality ingredients along with 100% US grown hemp to deliver a transparent and premium product to people seeking the benefit of hemp extract. We feel this makes us stand out in an industry that is still so new.” - Gunhee Park, co-founder at Populum
Will I get high?
It is important to know that CBD oil is a non psychoactive compound and will not get you high. The THC component of the cannabis plant is what is psychoactive and will give you that euphoric high. THC is also present in medical marijuana, but of course you still need a license for that in the majority of states.
Okay, so I have shared all of my research with you about CBD oil and now it is time to share my experience with you.
My first time trying CBD oil was at a coffee shop, Jus Organic, in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. They had CBD infused lattes on their menu and I couldn’t help but want to try it after all of the research I did and positive things I had heard from various people. At the time, I was also experiencing a lot of anxiety which was causing some major upper body and neck tension as well as sleep deprivation.
Sometime after drinking the latte, I noticed that I was feeling a lot calmer and not so anxious. My focus was also more clear, which came as a surprise to me because at the time I did not know this was a thing! One of the biggest benefits I noticed was that I slept like a baby that night and woke up feeling rested and refreshed.
A few days later I ordered my first bottle of CBD oil and have been using it daily. CBD oil has helped improve not only my sleep cycles, but has also helped with my headaches, anxiety, chronic neck pain, and menstrual cramps (especially these suckers). There aren’t many natural medicines that have been effective in helping with my pain management so I am grateful to have discovered this remedy.
I have tried CBD oil in a few different concoctions, including adding it to my matcha or bath. But for me, it is most effective when taking a few drops under my tongue. Most topical forms of CBD oil taste good, for example Populum is made with grapeseed and orange oil so they are nice and tasty.
If you've thought about trying CBD oil, but had your doubts prior to this post, I hope that you've found the information you need to help you make a clear decision as to whether CBD oil is the right elixir for you.
